Lately Zoey’s favorite thing to do is add “just like mommy” to the end of her sentence. She says, “I want to wear a princess dress… Just like mommy!” or “I want to eat an apple… Just like mommy.” It melts my heart… I love that she thinks I am cool and wants to be like me. I am sure that won’t last forever so I am just savoring this stage. It got me thinking about how as a teenager and young adult I felt the need to be more independent from my mom and really be different and be myself, and now as a parent I feel like I am back to wanting to be “just like mom”. I pray daily that I can be at least half the mother my mom was and is.
Mothers Day is just around the corner so I decided to get a head start and make something for my mom while she is in town visiting. My mom absolutely loves gardening and she is in the process of moving to a new house so I thought it would be fun to put together a ‘Gardeners Essentials’ gift kit for her. Zoey and I went to Walmart and picked out a variety of things to put in the gift, we found the most beautiful selection of cards by American Greetings and we picked out a couple that had a garden theme. I noticed that their Mothers Day cards were designed to suit whatever mom you were celebrating, your own or someone else’s (like your sister, friend, grandma, etc.). I decided to grab one for a friend of mine, Amey, she is an amazing mother I admire who also loves to garden!
Zoey and I had so much fun putting our kits together. They were so simple to create. Here is a little how to for anyone who wants to try it.
DIY Gardeners Essentials Kit
What you need for one kit:
- small blooming flower
- flower pot
- small shovel
- a few seed packets
- gardening gloves
- labels
- alphabet stickers
- glue sticks
- scissors
- Optional: I got Dove Specials chocolate to add a little extra love
From American Greetings (isle D18 at Walmart):
- a gift bag
- two packs of tissue paper
- a roll of wrapping paper
- a greeting card
How to put your kit together:
- I wrapped and labeled each of the seed packets using the wrapping paper, this makes them look WAY cuter and match the rest the kit. Lay the seed packet on the wrapping paper and use it to measure how much paper you need to fold an envelope around the seed packet. Use the glue stick to secure the envelope around the seed packet and to attach a label to the front of each seed packet. The alphabet stickers are for labeling the type of seeds in each packet.
- Stuff one sheet of paper in the bottom of the flower pot.
- Layer the chocolates on top if you are including those, then wedge the small shovel into the tissue and chocolates so it stands up in place.
- Lay a sheet of tissue down and place the flower in the center, bunch the paper around the flower and place it in the pot at a slight angle.
- Stuff the gloves in beside the flower, angled in the opposite direction.
- Add the seed packets.
- Use two sheets of tissue to wrap the pot itself and put it inside the gift bag!
- Write a personal message inside your gift card. I placed the card right on top of the tissue in the bag where it was easy to find.
We had so much fun making our kits that we decided to plant a flower in our garden together as well! Zoey smells it every time we go outside.
