Every few months I check The Christmas Tree Shops for new additions to The Grainhouse home decor collection. If you have seen my home makeover, and living room design with The Grainhouse, you will remember why I love them so much. To sum it up in a few words: quality, aesthetic, affordability. A few months ago Kris and I decided to create more space in our master bedroom by moving the bed over to the wall, but when we did that we failed to update the rest of the room design. That has left it looking a little lop-sided and disorganized. I decided it was time for a refresh last time I was at The Christmas Tree Shops. The Grainhouse always inspires me to give my home a fresh and clean design. It was fun bring that into the master bedroom design.
The room came out beautifully. It is currently my favorite room in the house. Considering how much I LOVE my office, that is saying a lot. Here are 5 things to consider when designing your master bedroom.
Designing Your Master Suite – 5 Things You Probably Didn’t Think Of
1. Create a Relaxing Escape
The first thing on your list of priorities should be creating a haven where you can relax and escape from the stresses of life. Every other area of your life can be busy, crowded, filled with deadlines and noise, but your master suite should be your sanctuary. Some key elements that make my master bedroom a retreat for me is a white noise machine, candles (I love the Grainhouse selection), mood lighting – think a salt lamp, and a comfortable bed. For practical elements that you need to have in your bedroom, like a clock and a calendar, choose decor that fits in with your master bedroom design, rather than detracting from it. The Grainhouse has a beautiful calendar and a variety of clocks that serve practical purposes, without taking away from the overall serenity I try and create when designing my master suite.
2. Add Living Space
Another thing that is huge for me is creating living space, not just sleeping space, in my master bedroom design. That is essentially why we pushed our bed across the room. We realized there was a lot of wasted space in our master bedroom. Sleeping is what we do most in our bedroom, but we also do a significant amount of living in there as well. Our master bedroom is the gathering place for family prayers in the morning and evening, it is where Kris and I have netflix date nights, I fold and put away laundry in there often. It is nice to have some space to hang out, as well as sleep.
3. Don’t Forget Organization!
There is no point to creating a relaxing atmosphere, and extra living space, if it is always a disorganized mess in your master bedroom. When you are designing your master bedroom be thoughtful about the organization. When you open drawers and closets in my house you will discover tons of organizational baskets. These are key to keeping things clean for me. I love the selection of baskets and crates that the Grainhouse has at The Christmas Tree Shops. Even the ones that I have on display as part of my room design are used as organizational storage for things like books, and extra blankets.
4. Bring in Light
Lighting plays a huge part in the overall feel of a room. If your master bedroom doesn’t get a lot of natural light you may want to bring in some extra lighting to brighten your space. The Grainhouse has beautiful options for this at a price point that works for me.
5. Choose the Right Colors
I don’t know if it is based in science or not, but I definitely have heard a lot of people say color effects their mood. This is definitely true for me! I realized recently that all the things in my closet that I buy and never wear were the same color, and then I realized it was because that certain shade of yellow made me feel stressed! Soft neutral colors like blues, gentle purples, toned-white, and grays, are all calming colors. The entire Grainhouse line is designed with calming colors like this that are perfect for your master suite.
Your master bedroom can be as unique as you are, but I think that the best master bedroom designs include all 5 of these elements. We are really enjoying our new design and the fresh feel the Grainhouse has given our master bedroom.
